Categories and Criteria
Each year, the ICOY Awards honor companies in various categories chosen by
the Selection Committee. Categories include, but are not limited to:
Best New Incubator Company
This category recognizes companies that have entered a Maryland incubator
since January of the previous year.
Best Life Science Company
This category recognizes companies involved in the biotechnology or life
sciences industry.
Best Information Technology Company
This category recognizes companies involved in data management, wireless
communication, and other forms of information technology.
Best Technology Service Company
This category recognizes companies that produce or provide sophisticated
methods to deliver technological or web-based services.
Best Tech Transfer Company
This category recognizes companies that are commercializing technology
transferred from an educational or public research institution.
Best Homeland Security Company
This category recognizes companies that produce products or provide services involved in the defense or security sector.
Best Green Company
This category recognizes companies that produce products or provide services that minimize damage to the environment.
Best Graduate Company
This category recognizes companies that have graduated from an incubator
and continue to operate independently in another facility.
Awards Criteria
Depending on the category, companies are selected based on a number of factors.
Criteria considered include:
- Success in achieving its objectives; technology or product development

Growth in revenue or earnings
- Number of customers and significant customers
- Technology transfer

Attraction of outside investors

Impact on the region
Award winners will be chosen based on their nomination form, onsite visits,
and interviews with references. Finalists and winners will have the opportunity to
display their products and services at the awards ceremony.
