2007 Award Recipients
Best New Incubator Company – Millennial Media, Inc.
Housed in the Emerging Technology Center in Baltimore City, Millennial Media has developed a technology to provide targeted advertising directly to mobile devices. After its first year of operations, Millennial has already developed two new mobile products, secured $6.3 million in venture capital and landed a number of marquee clients including, Paramount, Sony-Ericsson, Cover Girl and Sprint. Millennial expects to grow to 30 employees and have over $2.5 million in revenue this year.
Best Life Science Company – Lentigen Corporation
Also located at the TechCenter at UMBC, Lentigen focuses on manufacturing and developing lentiviral vectors for therapeutic and biotechnological applications. Lentigen has already secured $6.1 million in venture capital; has received 6 NIH grants; expects to grow to 25 employees this year; and is on track to begin clinical trials in 4 functional areas within the next 12 months.
Best Information Technology – LiveHealthier
Located in the Rockville Innovation Center, LiveHealthier has developed an on-line community of individuals and certified health exerts to help people establish and meet their health goals. In a very short time, LiveHealthier has developed one of the premier websites in the country capturing the current trend of businesses to promote healthier life styles among their employees. LiveHealthier has already secured key contracts with Quintiles Transnational Corp., Health Education & Screening Corp. and numerous others; projects to grow to 15 employees and $1.1 million in revenue this year; and recently received the Work Place Innovation Award by the American Heart Association.
Best Technology Service – Sycamore.US, Inc.
Located in the Garrett Information Enterprise Center, Sycamore provides high tech software for the US intelligence and defense communities. Sycamore is a huge success story for western Maryland. It has already expanded its original space in the incubator five fold; projects to have 131 employees and over $17 million dollars in revenue this year; and has landed such key customers as NSA, SBA, Lockheed Martin and Freddy Mac. In a short period of time, Sycamore has become one of the largest employers in Western Maryland.
Best Technology Transfer Company – BioFortis, Inc.
Located in the Emerging Technology Center in Baltimore City , BioFortis has developed a web-based software application that integrates clinical data with a patients unique molecular makeup to accelerate clinical research and make personalized medicine possible. BioFortis has already secured over $2.6 million in angel funding and $3 million in grants; landed such marquee customers such as NIH, The Cleveland Clinic and The National Human Genome Institute; and expects to earn over $2.8 million in revenue this year.
Best Graduate Company – BDMetrics, Inc.
A graduate of the TechCenter at UMBC, BDMetrics provides an ASP based service matches conference and trade show attendees with potential clients and partners even before the trade show begins. BDMetrics is a classic incubator success story. Starting with a handful of employees at the UMBC TechCenter, BDMetrics secured $4.7 million in venture capital and quickly became the “match.com” for tradeshow exhibitors and attendees. BDMetrics has already landed such marquee clinics as The American Heart Association, the International Electronics Show, Supercom, and, just recently, the BIO Conference in Boston. BDMetrics has moved into the UMBC Research Park, expects to grow to approximately 120 employees this year, and is currently leasing over 20,000 square feet of space.
Hall of Fame Inductee – Digene Corporation
Digene was originally a member of the Technology Advancement Program at College Park. For those who don’t know, Digene develops, manufactures and markets proprietary DNA and RNA tests focused on women’s cancers and infectious diseases. The Company flagship product, the Digene HPV test is the only FDA approved test for the human papillomavirus (HPV), the primary cause of cervical cancer. Digene’s product portfolio also includes DNA tests for other sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, as well as tests for blood viruses. Headquartered in Gaithersburg Maryland, Digene trades on the NASDAQ exchange and markets its tests in more than forty countries world wide. Digene now employees over 500 people and recently announced that it was being purchased by Qiagene for $1.6 billion in stock and cash.
